At Basil College, we envision a learning environment where every student discovers their unique potential and develops into confident, independent learners. Our academic vision centers on nurturing critical thinkers who are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to excel in an ever-changing global landscape. We are committed to fostering intellectual curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
Our curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive, balanced, and engaging educational experience that prepares students for life as independent learners. We believe in delivering excellence through a well-structured program that combines academic rigor with practical application. Each subject is taught by well-qualified specialist teachers who bring expertise and passion to their classrooms, ensuring that students receive the highest quality education. Our curriculum emphasizes not just knowledge acquisition, but the development of essential skills including problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and digital literacy.
The JSS curriculum follows the Nigerian Basic Education framework, offering a broad-based program that builds strong foundational knowledge across multiple disciplines. Students engage with core subjects that develop essential competencies while also exploring creative and practical subjects that nurture diverse talents and interests. Our structured approach ensures progressive learning, with each year building upon previous knowledge and skills. The curriculum is delivered through interactive teaching methods, continuous assessment, and personalized support to meet individual learning needs.
The Subjects are:
The Senior Secondary School curriculum at Basil College is designed to prepare students for higher education and future career success. Our vision is to develop well-rounded individuals who possess both academic excellence and practical skills necessary for the 21st century. We aim to produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also possess strong analytical abilities, ethical values, and the confidence to pursue their chosen paths in tertiary education and beyond.
Our SSS curriculum provides a specialized yet flexible learning pathway that allows students to focus on their areas of strength and interest while maintaining a solid foundation in core subjects. We believe in offering choices that align with students' career aspirations, whether in Science, Arts, or Commercial fields. The curriculum is structured to meet both WAEC and NECO requirements while incorporating enrichment programs that broaden students' perspectives and enhance their competitive edge in university admissions and future endeavors.
The SSS curriculum is composed of compulsory core subjects and elective subjects chosen based on students' intended career paths. Students select from three main streams: Science, Arts, or Commercial, and can take a maximum of 4 additional subjects from their chosen category. A typical student will study between 8 to 9 subjects for the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). Beyond the standard curriculum, the school offers various enrichment subjects and programs to ensure students maintain broad-based academic exposure and develop diverse competencies.
Compulsory subjects to be studied are:
Our JSS curriculum employs a comprehensive scheme that delivers clear milestones of attainment for each age group. We provide a genuinely broad-based educational framework where foundational knowledge and skills are systematically built. The curriculum ensures that students progress through well-defined learning stages, with each year building upon previous achievements to create a solid academic foundation for senior secondary education.
Assessment is an important part of Basil’s ethos of education. Pupils are tracked from when they enter the school through testing, using our teaching, evaluating, analysis and management (TEAM) method. During their Primary school years, pupils are tested, evaluated and analysed on an annual basis with regular assessment, both formal and informal, taking place throughout the year. These tests help us identify any problem areas pupils have and where improvements can be made. The assessments are feedback to parents at Parent/ Teachers evening and termly reports. Children who fall below expected levels of attainment are automatically given extra support with lessons after school hours.
Interactive whiteboards and digital learning tools enhance our JSS teaching methodology. Traditional subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science are enriched through multimedia presentations, interactive exercises, and visual demonstrations. This technology-enhanced approach increases student engagement, facilitates better understanding of complex concepts, and prepares students for digital literacy in the modern world.
Our curriculum allows for differentiated learning. Children are grouped within each class according to their individual needs. We take into account the aptitude as well as the age of the individual child in order to make learning meaningful.
Communication between home and school is critical to the success of a child at school. We encourage all parents to become involved in their child’s progress through school. We regularly hold Parents’ Evenings, Parents Forum, workshops and assemblies so that each parent can join in the family atmosphere of the school. We also have an open-door policy to ensure that parents forge strong links with the school. Updates, newsletters and letters are sent via email, WhatsApp and text.
Basil code of behaviour is ensured from pre-school. We aim for self-discipline and consideration for others. There are clear structured guidelines on behaviour. We offer Moral instruction and etiquette classes. From the early years, pupils are taught an appreciation of good manners and they acquire behavioural and social skills as they progress in the different levels. Minor and major offences are punished according to the stipulated code of discipline by the school with the child being shown and guided to understand why his or her actions were wrong and why a punishment may be necessary. Basil adopts a therapeutic approach to behaviour management – ‘All behaviour is a form of communication’. So where behavioural standards fall short, we take time to understand and work with the child.
We create opportunities for students to take their studies beyond the classrooms. All classes undertake educational visits from time to time, within and outside the country, to consolidate lessons taught.
We aim to provide a learning environment that is happy, secure and welcoming. Where each child feels valued and loved. We have student welfare officials who listen to children’s worries and solve them before they become problems. Parents are also encouraged to discuss their worries with pupil’s teacher or head of pastoral and management.
Well-structured Timetable that ensures students have an active and enjoyable learning experience in a disciplined environment.
Throughout the primary school and college years, students are given positions of responsibility and are taught to be more self-reliant. Students vote for their own class captains, House captains, prefects and enjoy academic and sporting competitions between the four school houses and other schools.
Our SSS program includes comprehensive career guidance to help students make informed decisions about their academic streams and future careers. Professional counselors work with students to identify their strengths, interests, and career aspirations, guiding them in selecting appropriate subject combinations and preparing for university entrance examinations.
We implement rigorous preparation programs for WAEC and NECO examinations. Students undergo regular mock examinations, intensive revision sessions, and targeted support in challenging subject areas. Our proven track record of 100% pass rates demonstrates the effectiveness of our examination preparation strategies and the dedication of our teaching staff.
Beyond secondary school examinations, we prepare students for university admission processes including JAMB/UTME preparation, personal statement writing, and interview skills. Our enrichment programs expose students to university-level thinking and research skills, ensuring they transition smoothly to higher education.
SSS students are given significant leadership opportunities through the prefect system, house captain roles, and student council positions. These experiences develop essential skills in responsibility, decision-making, public speaking, and team management that prepare them for leadership roles in university and beyond.
